Katherine Befus, nicknamed Cathy, was born in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, U.S. She was a nursing missionary dispatched from the World Vision U.S. Befus came to Dongsan Christian Hospital on behalf of Kathleen Cowan, who was dispatched from a British World Vision.

Befus took care of orphans in the children's hospital ward, and according to her, orphans were hungry for love, and she helped children understand God's great love, and took care of them with warm hearts and love. She also taught English conversation and nursing at a nursing school.
