Walter Kaltefleiter was a man who traveled all over the world and lived like an international wanderer. He came to Busan after agreeing to work in Daegu with a Korean doctor, but the contract was broken and he ended up living with a Japanese family in Busan. Then one day, Japanese health authorities asked Fletcher for Walter, who joined medical staff at Dongsan Christian Hospital.
He was single and hospital people said he was a "German doctor." He was always very clear and polite. Although he was not a Christian, he participated in a prayer meeting and read the Bible in English when it became his turn. He also decided to quit smoking.
In 1930, Marda Bruen died of cancer and Walter moved next door to Fletcher. In 1932, he left Daegu with Bruen, who was leaving for sabbatical.
